Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 12, 2026 · Last updated: October 20, 2026
Deportee Defense Inc. (“Deportee Defense,” “we,” “us”) is a nonprofit corporation recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) public charity (EIN 42-4881048). This policy explains what information we collect through deporteedefense.org (the “Site”), how we use it, and the choices you have. We collect as little as we can, and we do not sell personal information.
1. Information we collect
Information you give us. If you use the contact form, you may provide your first and last name, email address, phone number (optional) and your message. If you donate, we receive the details needed to process and acknowledge your gift, such as your name, email address, mailing address if you provide one, and the amount and date of your gift. If you opt in to text messages, we also collect your mobile phone number and a record of your consent.
Information collected automatically. Like most websites, our hosting provider records technical information when you visit, such as your IP address, browser type, device type, the pages you view and the date and time of your visit. We use this to keep the Site secure and working properly.
Cookies, analytics and browser storage. We use Google Analytics, a web analytics service provided by Google, to understand how visitors find and use the Site (for example, which pages are viewed and how long visits last) so we can improve it. Google Analytics uses cookies and similar technologies to collect information such as your IP address, device and browser type, approximate location and pages visited, and reports it to us in aggregate. We do not use this information to identify you personally, and we do not use the Site for advertising or remarketing. The Site also uses your browser’s temporary session storage to remember that you closed the donation pop-up, so we don’t show it repeatedly; this stays in your browser and is cleared when you close it.
2. How the contact form works
When you submit the contact form, it opens a pre-addressed message in your own email program, addressed to info@deporteedefense.org. We receive only what you choose to send from your email account, and your email provider handles that message under its own policies.
3. How we use information
- To respond to your questions and messages.
- To process donations, send receipts and thank-you notes, and keep the financial records the law requires of charities.
- To send updates about our work, if you ask to receive them. You can unsubscribe at any time.
- To operate and secure the Site, and to understand how it is used so we can improve it.
- To comply with legal obligations.
- To send text messages you have opted into, as described in Section 6.
4. Donations and payment information
Online gifts are processed by a third-party payment processor. We do not store full credit card or bank account numbers on this Site. We keep a record of each gift (donor name, contact details, amount and date) so we can issue receipts and meet our legal and tax reporting duties.
Donations are processed through Givebutter, our online fundraising platform, which provides the donation form and sends your gift receipt. After you give, we may email you a thank-you message and tax-receipt information from info@deporteedefense.org. If you give monthly, we may send a separate thank-you for your recurring gift. Every email we send includes an unsubscribe link, and you can opt out of non-receipt updates at any time. Givebutter handles your information under its own privacy policy.
Text messages (SMS). If you sign up for text messages at deporteedefense.org/sms-signup or opt in on another form, we collect your name, mobile phone number, and a record of your consent (the date, time, and the wording you agreed to). We use this only to send the texts you requested, such as donation receipts and thank-you messages, updates about our work, and fundraising appeals, and to honor your opt-out. Message frequency varies, and message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP at any time to unsubscribe or HELP for help. Consent is not a condition of donating. No mobile information will be shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes, and we never sell or share SMS opt-in data or phone numbers. SMS consent is not shared with third parties. See also our Terms of Service, which include our SMS terms.
5. When we share information
We do not sell, rent or trade personal information. We share it only with:
- Service providers who help us run the Site and our work, such as web hosting, email and payment processing, and only as needed to provide those services.
- Legal and safety needs, when required by law, subpoena or court order, or to protect the rights, safety or property of others.
- Partner organizations or attorneys, only if you ask us to put you in touch and agree to the sharing.
We do not sell or share SMS opt-in data or phone numbers collected for text messaging. SMS consent is not shared with third parties or affiliates. See Section 6.
Donor information is never published without the donor’s permission.
6. Text messaging (SMS)
If you choose to receive text messages from Deportee Defense, this section explains how we handle your information. Consent to receive text messages is optional and is not a condition of donating, contacting us, or receiving any service.
What we collect. Your mobile phone number, your name if you provide it, and a record of your consent (when and how you agreed to receive text messages).
How we use it. Only to send the text messages you agreed to receive: updates about our work, donation requests, thank-you and receipt messages, and replies to your questions. Message frequency varies. Message and data rates may apply.
Who we share it with. We do not sell or share your SMS opt-in data or your phone number with any third party or affiliate for the purpose of SMS, marketing or promotion. SMS consent is not shared with third parties or affiliates. We do not sell, rent or trade phone numbers. We use a messaging service provider only to deliver text messages on our behalf; it may handle your number only for that purpose and may not use it for its own purposes. We may disclose information when required by law.
Opting out and getting help. You can cancel at any time by replying STOP to any message; you will receive one confirmation and no further messages. Reply HELP for help, or contact us at info@deporteedefense.org.
7. Important: please do not send case details through this Site
Deportee Defense is a charity that raises funds for legal defense. We are not a law firm and do not give legal advice. Please do not send immigration case details, A-numbers, identity documents or other sensitive information through the contact form or by email. If you or someone you know needs legal help, contact a licensed immigration attorney or an accredited legal services organization.
8. Third-party services and links
The Site loads fonts from Google Fonts and uses Google Analytics (described in Section 1), which means your browser connects to Google’s servers and Google may receive your IP address and other technical information. Google’s use of this information is governed by its own Privacy Policy. You can opt out of Google Analytics by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on or by blocking cookies in your browser settings. The Site also links to other websites (for example, news and research sources). We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites, so please review their policies.
9. How long we keep information
We keep personal information only as long as needed for the purposes above. Donation records are kept for the period required by tax and nonprofit record-keeping laws. Messages you send us are kept as long as needed to respond and for our records, then deleted.
10. Your choices and rights
You can ask us to access, correct or delete the personal information we hold about you, or to stop sending you updates, by emailing info@deporteedefense.org. Depending on where you live (for example, California and certain other states), you may have additional privacy rights under state law. We will honor valid requests as the law requires. We may need to keep some donation records even after a deletion request, to meet legal obligations.
11. Security
We use reasonable safeguards to protect information, including secure (HTTPS) connections on the Site. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
12. Children
The Site is intended for adults and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has sent us information, email us and we will delete it.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The effective date at the top shows when it was last revised, and the current version will always be posted on this page.
